Act 1: Personal Reflection
So far I think that Macbeth is not as bad as people say it is. The language the play is written is can be very hard to read though. The words in the play are hard to because you have to combine certain words together and the combined words do not look like anything we would usually write. Macbeth takes place a very long time ago so some of the words are different than the words we use today. It has a very high diction level. Every other sentence needs to be reread and interpreted at a slow rate. Only into Act 1, you can already see that each of the characters has their own personalities. One thing that surprised me was Lady Macbeth’s character. I was expecting her to be this sweet innocent wife who tried her hardest to stay out of her husband’s “work” life. But she is definitely far from my assumption. When Macbeth sent her the letter about how the witches said he would be king from here after, Lady Macbeth said that she would help him kill the king. Lady Macbeth’s explanation of how she would kill the king was very harsh and cruel, and I would have never expected of women of that time period to have thoughts like that. One thing I found strange was that The King told Macbeth he was second in line for the throne. When the witches told him he would be king, I just figured the king would make Macbeth next in line, not his son Malcolm. It was confusing why the king would do that if the witches had told Macbeth otherwise. That also leads me to believe that there will be many events when the king comes for dinner at Macbeth’s house. Also the witches in the play are a little eerie and strange. I think the three witches could mean something such as the past, present and future. Witch one who said his previous title Thane of Glamis. The second Witch would be Macbeth’s present because she addressed him as Thane of Cawdor. The future witch is the third witch who greeted Macbeth by saying Macbeth shall be king hereafter.
